Seiya Ota

Chemist & Science Communicator
At UBC, I research synthetic and coordination chemistry while working in science communication and technical research support.
01 Focus
Four ways I connect research with people and decisions.
Research
Molecular design, synthetic chemistry, coordination chemistry, platinum complexes, and molecular structure and photophysics.
Science Communication
Talks, teaching, and public-facing work that make complex chemistry understandable without losing scientific precision.
Study Abroad & Research Careers
Experience-based perspectives from research exchange, industry R&D, and undertaking a PhD abroad with family.
Research & Business Support
Research that connects scientific evidence with technical options, use cases, customer questions, and the next decision.
02 About
From industry R&D to a PhD abroad with my family.
I studied organic chemistry at Kanagawa University and Tokyo Institute of Technology, completed a research placement at UBC, and worked in R&D for a Japanese chemical company. In 2022, I moved to Canada with my family. I now conduct doctoral research in synthetic and coordination chemistry at UBC alongside science communication, writing on graduate study abroad, and technical research for companies.
